Aquesta recerca analitza el pensament i l'acció política de Pasqual Maragall en relació amb l'àrea metropolitana de Barcelona des de finals dels anys 1970 fins al 2006. Gràcies a una exhausitva anàlisi documental i la realització d'entrevistes, la recerca aprofundeix en la concepció política del que ell anomena la Barcelona real o la ciutat metropolitana. Com a alcalde de Barcelona i President de la Corporació Metropolitana de Barcelona (CMB), Maragall reivindica el dret a la ciutat metropolitana i la necessitat de comptar amb un govern metropolità fort. Tanmateix, la seva visió territorial xoca amb la del Govern de la Generalitat, liderat per Jordi Pujol, i tampoc és compartida pel conjunt d'alcaldes metropolitans. L'autora mostra també l'evolució del pensament metropolità de Maragall un cop dissolta la CMB l'any 1987 i posteriorment com a cap de l'oposició al Govern i com a President de la Generalitat. El seu discurs, adpatat al nou context, manté una línia de continuïtat respecte a les idees anteriors. El debat actual sobre com governar la Barcelona real no es pot entendre sense el llegat de Pasqual Maragall i la seva lluita pel dret a la ciutat metropolitana.

Catalunya, xarxa de ciutats analitza el pensament i l'acció municipalista de Pasqual Maragall, traçant una línia de continuïtat entre la seva contribució a la transformació de la ciutat de Barcelona i l'impuls al municipalisme català durant el seu mandat com alcalde (1982-1997) i la seva acció política com a President de la Generalitat entre 2003 i 2006.
L'autor d'aquesta recerca defineix les principals característiques del pensament municipalista de Maragall, que entronca clarament amb la tradició del catalanisme progressista, i ens mostra la coherència entre l'acció política del Maragall alcalde i l'acció política del Maragall President, que impulsa l'enfortiment institucional dels governs locals i la descentralització de les polítiques sectorials del Govern de la Generalitat.

Després de diversos anys exercint la professió mèdica, tant en la vessant clínica com en la de gestió, és nomenat Director dels Serveis Sanitaris de l’Ajuntament de Barcelona (1979-1983).
El 1983 esdevé regidor de l'Ajuntament de Barcelona en sortir escollit a les llistes electorals del PSC. Primer com a responsable de l'Àrea de Salut Pública (1983-1987), després com a regidor del districte de Ciutat Vella (1987-1991) i quatre anys després, com a segon tinent d'alcalde, amb responsabilitat directa sobre l'àmbit d'Organització, Economia i Hisenda (1991-1997).
Va ser Alcalde de Barcelona (1997-2006) agafant el relleu de Pasqual Maragall.
Ministre d'Indústria, Turisme i Comerç del govern Zapatero (2006-2008).
Ambaixador d'Espanya a Turquia (2008-2010).
Director Executiu d'ONU-Habitat, el Programa de Nacions Unides pels Assentaments Humans (2010-2018).

Va estudiar a l'Escola d'Aprenents de la Maquinista Terrestre i Marítima MTM, on va cursar formació professional de primer grau de 1958 a 1961. Va treballar a la MTM fins al 1968, quan va ser acomiadat per motius polítics.

El 2013 funda la revista de pensament La Maleta de Portbou, que encara dirigeix, i l’Escola Europea d’Humanitats.

Delegat de l’Estat al Consorci de la Zona Franca (2004-2012).
Fou un dels fundadors del Front Obrer de Catalunya, després va ser un dels creadors de Convergència Socialista de Catalunya, des d’on va ingressar al PSC-Congrés i d'allà al Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya quan es va fundar, ocupant-hi diverses responsabilitats.

Entrevista a Enric Truñó i Lagares (Barcelona, 1949), enginyer químic i polític.
Regidor de l’Ajuntament de Barcelona (1979-1998), al capdavant de diverses àrees: joventut, esports, ensenyament i turisme, així com el districte de Sants-Montjuïc. Va ser el regidor responsable dels Jocs Olímpics d’estiu de 1992.
Fou comissionat de l’Alcaldia pel Fòrum Universal de les Cultures (1996-98) i vicepresident de la Diputació de Barcelona (1987-91).

Entrevista a Mary Ann Newman (Nova York, 1951), lingüista i traductora.
Ha ensenyat llengua i literatura espanyola i catalana en diverses universitats estatunidenques i ha escrit articles sobre literatura i traducció i ha publicat traduccions del castellà i el català a l’anglès d’autors com Quim Monzó, Joan Maragall i Narcís Comadira.
Va ser la coordinadora de la Càtedra Nova York-Barcelona a la New York University (1983 a 1986).
Va col·laborar en diverses ocasions amb Pasqual Maragall a finals dels 90 amb les seves activitats acadèmiques entre Nova York i Roma. Després amb les candidatures d’aquest a la presidència de la Generalitat (1999 i 2003).
Va dirigir el Catalan Center de Nova York-Institut Ramon Llull, adscrit a la NYU (2006 a 2011).
Dirigeix el Farragut Fund for Catalan Culture in the US.
