Acte de lliurament de la Medalla d'Or de la Generalitat de
Catalunya a Joan Raventós i Carner

Senyors consellers, senyores conselleres, senyors diputats, autoritats, senyor alcalde,
família Reventós:
Efectivament, Raimon Obiols, Ítaca és el viatge. Ítaca és el viatge. A vegades, quan un
arriba a Ítaca comença a pensar que el més important i el més bonic era el viatge. A no ser
que hi hagués alguna altra cosa, que hi és, en aquest moment i en aquest país, que és el
viatge que ens falta per fer. I aquest viatge és el més seductor de tots, aquest viatge és el
que realment ens belluga, el que encara no hem fet. I el que farem en bona mesura, gràcies
a persones com en Joan.
Pensant que l'acte d'avui és un acte de justícia històrica amb l'home i el polític, Joan
Reventós i Carner, em preguntava què hauria pogut ser i em responc: ho hauria pogut ser
tot. Hauria pogut ser el que hagués volgut, però va posar per davant la unitat.
Ell va guanyar les primeres eleccions democràtiques. Recordo el 15 de juny de 1977,
recordo perfectament que els diaris van parlar aleshores de Catalunya, de la taca roja
d'Europa, perquè a Europa, en aquell moment, d'esquerres no n'hi havia al Govern, o n'hi
havia molt poques, i Joan Reventós era efectivament el vencedor.
Hauria pogut ser el que hagués volgut ser en aquell moment. Però ell va ser el que va
proposar en el míting final, que si ell guanyava tornaria el president Tarradellas. I,
efectivament, com aquí s'ha dit, el retorn del president Tarradellas i el restabliment de la
Generalitat va ser l'autèntica ruptura, d'aquella ruptura que havia començat amb reforma,
com recordareu perfectament.
El Govern d'unitat del president Tarradellas va ser possible, en gran part, gràcies a Joan
Reventós. Jo diria, en la major part.
Va ser la confirmació que la reforma política havia esdevingut ruptura, i va significar el
sacrifici d'una presidència de la Generalitat provisional, que lògicament li pertocava. Amb el
seu gest va obrir la porta als primers 25 anys de governació autònoma, democràtica i
pacífica de Catalunya. De fet, el que ara tenim i el que ara perseguim és el que Reventós
ens va convèncer de perseguir i d'obtenir: un Govern catalanista i d'esquerres, el Govern de
l'Entesa Catalana de Progrés. Mai no és massa tard. Però hauríem volgut que ell ho pogués
viure en primera persona, cert, aquí s'ha dit.
En aquest moment de la nostra història, però, podem preguntar-nos: què ens falta, què ens
manca, què cal encara?
Ara Catalunya ha obert les portes del seu futur i del futur de l'Espanya plural, de l'Espanya
federal, que sempre ha imaginat possible Joan Reventós.
I jo crec que ve a tomb ara, en aquest moment una virtut cardinal de Joan Reventós, que és
la virtut de la paciència, sobre la qual haig de dir, però, alguna cosa més que la pura
paciència. El socialisme democràtic té aquesta virtut, és cert.
Però Reventós era, contra el que semblava, un home en certa forma impacient, un home
amb una passió, dues passions: Catalunya i el socialisme. Però tenia una altra qualitat, que

�potser alguns no considerin una virtut. Reventós havia triomfat, va triomfar. Però Reventós
ha triomfat, perquè la Catalunya lliure i solidària i l'Espanya federal són a tocar de dits.
Per recórrer aquest tram decisiu, que encara falta per recórrer, caldrà que combinem les
dues virtuts que Joan Reventós ens va transmetre: aquesta que se li coneixia, la paciència,
però també l'altra, de la qual ha parlat el president Rigol, que és la passió per la unitat del
poble de Catalunya.
Posar Catalunya i la justícia social per damunt de tot va ser el seu objectiu. I ara és l'hora
de realitzar aquest objectiu. Això li devem, com li devem la defensa de la dignitat. De tot el
que Catalunya està proposant, segurament se'n pot discrepar, però no es pot atacar la
nostra dignitat com a poble, la que ell, Joan Reventós, va defensar com ningú, ni la nostra
lleialtat a les institucions i als pobles d'Espanya.
L'Espanya plural només es construirà des del respecte entre els pobles que la integren.
Aquest és un principi que Joan Reventós tenia molt clar i que ens ha d'inspirar ara i sempre.
Estic segur que aquest acte d'avui, que és un acte al mateix temps modest i emotiu, ens hi
ajudarà. El seu principi, el principi que ell havia perseguit, és la nostra fita en aquest
moment. I el que queda per fer és el més interessant del camí. Ja el farem, ja el farem
il.luminats per l'exemple, pel mestratge, pel tarannà, per la passió, que hi era, passió
inconfusible, de Joan Reventós.

- Un premi com el de L'Associació de les Nacions Unides per
a Espanya, més enllà de la seva dotació modesta, té un
gran valor perquè l'associació representa un sector molt
significatiu de l'opinió pública espanyola. (Recordar que
l'Associació que té la seu a Barcelona és d'àmbit
espanyol)
- L'Associació representa un sector d'opinió popular però
il.lustrada en la ciència dels valors humans i de la pau,
com ha demostrat abastament en la seva defensa constant
dels principis de la carta de les Nacions Unides.
- La decisió d'atorgar el Premi en l'edició de 1989 a
Mikhail Gorbatxov prova, una vegada més, l'acceptació que
té en l'opinió pública occidental la figura del President
Gorbatxov. Tant és així que quan determinades veus demanen
canvis a Occident, fins i tot veus de l'Església Catòlica,
ho fan reclamant "un Gorbatxov per a Occident".

- Efectivament, com es diu a l'Acta de la sessió de
concessió del Premi, Mikhail Gorbatxov ha aportat a les
relacions internacionals una nova dimensió qualitativa i
moral.
- Avui és pràcticament unànim el reconeixement que, gràcies
a les accions proposades per Gorbatxov, la pau i la
seguretat internacionals han resultat enfortides, i la
llibertat i la democràcia han avançat extraordinàriament a
l'Europa Central i Oriental i a la pròpia Unió Soviètica.
Per això, el Premi ha estat encertat i és oportú.
- Els ciutadans han percebut aquests grans canvis d'una
manera moralment apreciable: la por ha retrocedit i
l'esperança ha revifat.
- La ciutat de Barcelona es complauria enormement que
Mikhail Gorbatxov pogués visitar-la en el transcurs del
seu viatge oficial a Espanya. Aprofitar, doncs,
l'oportunitat per demanar a l'Ambaixador que en transmetre
el Premi al President Gorbatxov li traslladi també aquest
desig de Barcelona, que voldria mostrar-li com es prepara
per a acollir el gran esdeveniment mundial de pau i
fraternitat que seran els Jocs Olímpics d'Estiu de 1992.
